Other Resources
In recent years there has been an
explosion of information on caregiving and a wide range of topics that
are of interest to caregivers and seniors alike.
-
Across the country at state and
local levels, communities offer a wide range of programs and support
systems for seniors. At the same time, the programs offered in each
state may vary greatly, as does the degree to which a community is
elder friendly and elder ready.
-
You
can find information in every book store, but ask for recommendations
from other caregivers, primary care providers, professionals like staff
members at
the Volen Center, and support group
leaders.
-
Contact your local Area Agency on
Aging, county senior services, or your state’s Department of Elder Affairs
or Senior Services. Names vary but you will find listings in the local
telephone book for local, county, and state agencies.
-
Contact your local senior center,
where information on services should be available.
-
Refer to websites provided by national
organizations such as the National Council on Aging (NCOA) and the American
Association of Retired Persons (AARP). These national organizations have
performed extensive research to develop and provide the best information
possible for the use of caregivers and seniors alike.
-
Search the Internet. Be specific in
selecting search terms. Do not use terms like “senior activities.” Do use
terms like “Florida senior centers”, “adult day care guidelines”, “caregiver
training or education.”
